Suffolk County Celebrates a Once-in-a-Generation Milestone

Mastic is Revolutionary War ground. William Floyd signed the Declaration of Independence here. The Battle of Mastic was fought here in 1780. The First Purple Heart was awarded to a soldier who fought for this peninsula. This community doesn't just celebrate America's 250th — it is the story.

Project Update

The J. Hawkins House

A historic structure dating to the 1830s, located at 1431 Montauk Highway in Moriches. The property was acquired by Suffolk County and the Town of Brookhaven to preserve both its historical and natural significance across its 4.71-acre parcel. The Mastic Peninsula Historical Society has been designated to eventually take over the structure as its headquarters, once the building has been restored to a condition fit for that purpose. The Society will also serve as its caretaker โ€” a milestone that would give the organization a permanent home and public presence in the community for the first time. This project represents one of the most significant opportunities in the Society's history: a permanent base from which to house our archives, welcome researchers, and serve the community for generations to come.
